Deception Pass State Park Surprise Marriage Proposal

Deception Pass is one of the most stunning places to explore in Washington State. It's known for dramatic cliffs, scenic beaches, lush forests, and the iconic Deception Pass Bridge. It has the perfect location – not too far from the North Cascades National Park, near the tulip fields of Mount Vernon, and by ferries to the San Juan Islands and Olympic Peninsula.

Sam reached out with plans to propose during a spring road trip with his partner, Katy. They were planning to explore the Olympic National Park first and then end their trip in the North Cascades.

He knew he wanted to propose on one of their rest days between the big hikes they had planned in the national parks. Deception Pass stood out as the perfect spot. It offered a quiet moment, stunning views, and a chance to catch one last sunset near the end of their journey.

Sam proposed on the edge of the cliff, and Katy gave an ecstatic “Yes!” After taking in the moment together, Sam introduced Katy and I so we could capture some fresh engagement photographs.

As we explored the area, I learned that they’d seen every type of wildlife they were hoping to see, except for seals.

Just as they mentioned it, they spotted something at the end of a dock and asked if it might be a seal. I took a look, and it wasn’t a seal... it was an otter! I was thrilled because otter sightings are much rarer than seals.

We wrapped up the photoshoot as the sun set over the water, just in time to see seals swimming in the bay after all.

Congrats on your engagement, Katy and Sam!
